Q1. What is iodine?
Iodine is a naturally occurring essential element necessary for human growth and metabolic function. The body needs iodine but cannot make it. The thyroid gland needs iodine to make hormones. If the thyroid doesn’t have enough iodine to do its job, feedback systems in the body cause it to work harder. This can cause an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter), and other complications.
Q2. Do I get enough iodine from table salt?
The RDA (Recommended Daily Allowance) for iodine is 150mcg for adult men and women. The RDA for pregnant and breastfeeding women is 220mcg and 290mcg respectively. These RDAs are inadequate to provide enough iodine to promote optimal whole-body health. A person would need to consume a full tablespoon of salt to meet the Recommended Daily Allowance.
Q3. Can I get too much iodine?
Adults can tolerate up to 1100mcg of iodine per day. Exceeding this limit occasionally is not harmful. However, exceeding this limit frequently can have negative effects on the body.
Q4. What are the different types of iodine?
Different tissues of the body respond to different forms of iodine. There are two different forms; iodine and iodide. Using a supplement that contains both iodide and iodine is preferable. For Example: Iodine is utilized in the breasts and prostate where Iodide is utilized in the thyroid gland and skin.
Q5. How do I know if I have an allergy to Iodine?
An allergy to Iodine is a rare occurrence. Some signs of an allergic reaction are rash, fatigue, congestion, headache and fever.
Q6. What is Boron?
Boron is a trace mineral and a micronutrient with diverse and vitally important roles in metabolism that render it necessary for plant, animal, and human health.
Q7. Why should I take a Boron supplement?
People take boron supplements as medicine. Boron is used for building strong bones, treating osteoarthritis, as an aid for building muscles, and for improving thinking skills and muscle coordination.
Q8. What is Vitamin C and why should I take it?
Vitamin C is most well-known for its immune-supporting activity as well as its benefits as an antioxidant. However, it also supports biosynthesis of collagen, L-carnitine and certain neurotransmitters, and plays a role in protein metabolism.
Vitamin C also helps repair Symporters (an integral membrane protein that is involved in the transport of many differing types of molecules across the cell membrane) so they can help iodine get in the cells. Slow and weak symporters will reduce the amount of iodine that can be transferred. Vitamin C is also helpful in removing toxins and aiding digestion.
